About Us
Schmidt House Museum
Claus Schmidt opened a grocery store in Grants Pass in the late 1890s and, with his wife and four children, built a house at what is now 508 SW 5th St. Only the Schmidt family ever lived in the house, ending when the two daughters, Anna and Flora, deeded the house to the Josephine County Historical Society in 1978.

Today, the Historical Society cares for the house and provides guided tours. Docents are available to lead visitors through the house which contains many original pieces and fixtures, as well as donations from the Josephine County area.

Tours are available Tuesday-Friday from 11am-3pm (last tour leaves at 2:30pm) and cost $10 per person. Tours must consist of AT LEAST two people in a group. Prior to a tour, please stop in the JCHS office (peach colored house at 5th and K Streets with a parking lot attached) to check in.
Walk-ins can usually be accommodated but if you would like to be assured of docent availability, please call the office at 541-479-7827.
